HOW DID YOU IDENTIFY YOUR PASSION AND THE WORK THAT SATISFIED YOU VERSUS WORK THAT JUST PAID THE BILLS?

I’m a creative type, so when my work is aligned with my passions, everything flows. My mood, my energy, my inspiration, my relationships. It feels like my soul is on fire and shining bright. When I work just to pay the bills, I always start out positive, it’s just who I am, but in no time despite my positive outlook, my energy gets low, my mood feels dark, creativity fades and I feel like I am slowly dimming the light to my soul… I have had to work many years just to pay the bills. It has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

WHO WILL ETERNALLY BE A WOMAN YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT, AND WHY?

Iyanla Vanzant! Her capacity to tell the truth one needs to hear is unparalleled and we can all use that kind of honesty to grow and be better. Her tough love approach comes from a complete understanding of the deepest types of pain. To me helping the human experience is some of the most important work and she is it’s Queen.

IN LIGHT OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR HASHTAG #WHYITRIBE, WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO WE ALREADY ARE TODAY?

Life is hard, even on a good day! We are ever changing and so is the world around us, we are constantly readjusting ourselves, our perceptions and reactions to it. Sometimes we are so consumed by our everyday that we can’t see all the work or progress we’ve made. We need others (our Tribe) to be our mirrors and help us celebrate along the way. Even small victories are worth a party sometimes!!

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF/HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

It is extremely uncomfortable to compliment myself. I am stepping into my light professionally and my work is about healing and elevating others so, only in that case, can I say I am doing good work or making a difference. But again, I share those victories with my business partner, so it makes it easier to say.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

I worry people will think I am full of myself… Maybe others think it will make them unlikable. We have been conditioned to be likeable and demure anything else is categorized and problematic…. Slowly we are allowing each other to be our full selves as women and what a liberation that is!

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

I have learn to say thank you and I then let their words sit in me and try to take it in. I’m not always successful, but just like everything it’s a work in progress.

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA THAT WE, AS WOMEN, ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

By keeping us in competition all those years. By having no place at the table for us, then only having one chair at that table for women. How do we take back our power? By being vulnerable and telling our story and by listening to other women with compassion and an open heart.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

The more we talk to one another and listen, the more we will realize our experiences are much more alike, than different. We will realize that it is easier to support each other, than trying to step on each other to win.
