HOW DID YOU IDENTIFY YOUR PASSION AND THE WORK THAT SATISFIED YOU VERSUS WORK THAT JUST PAID THE BILLS?

That took a very long time and I think it’s still not completely identified yet. My professional career does not define who I am but it is a branch I feel comfortable in. I work in the building materials branch which is very conservative. This means I get to help entrepreneurs to modernize and optimize their processes. Helping them gives me feeling of great accomplishment.

More important is the work I deliver in the gym & the kitchen. I wasn’t obese, but I was overweight and more important, not happy with whom I was. I fell in love with Crossfit and found my perfect vent hole. It gave me the tools to deal with my problems and gave me a different relationship to food.

WHO WILL ETERNALLY BE A WOMAN YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT, AND WHY?
First I thought of my sisters. Then I thought of famous singers, actresses… But I think in my case the only right answer is me. Because I have not loved myself enough, I didn’t take care of myself enough and since I didn’t have very good role models around me, I think I am most proud of myself. Losing weight physically & mentally and getting strong externally & internally. I choose my own life and I respect and admire myself for that.

IN LIGHT OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR HASHTAG #WHYITRIBE, WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO WE ALREADY ARE TODAY?

It’s a cliché, but here it comes: life’s too short to not celebrate who you are. Carpe that f’n Diem. You only get one life and it’s so important to live yours, and not others’. Sometimes we feel alone. We feel like we are the only ones in the world trying to survive. But using #whyItribe means we are all in this together. Pinpointing something positive when all seems lost makes one another hope again.

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF/HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

When I finished a national competition’s qualifier a few weeks back. I tend to be very harsh on myself because I am a competitive person and always want to be the best I can be. But this time I told myself to have faith and trust my (inner) power, abilities and capabilities to get where I wanted to be. I trained my weaknesses for a year and I knew all that was left was having fun at it again. That day was absolutely awesome, and I was so proud of myself; I was smiling the whole day and I performed so well!

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

I’m from Holland and the most perfect answer to this is “ze gunnen het jou niet”. There’s not really an English translation to it, but it means that people don’t grant/adjudge your happiness. People are jealous so I think that makes women scared to be confident.

It’s hard to own who you are, when people are putting you down. Women can also be very unkind to each other and I think we still have a lot to win on that ground.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

I find it very hard to accept compliments and take them in fully. I’ve talked myself down a lot of the time in the past (and sometimes I still do today), but every day I’m getting more and more confident. When receiving a compliment I wait with giving an answer right away, I smile and thank them. I tend to give a compliment back as gratitude.

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA THAT WE, AS WOMEN, ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

“Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get with the work you didn’t do”.
Everyone, not only women, has to speak up. We need to find our inner strength and turn that into positive vibes. If we don’t do anything to change, the world won’t change either. I think too many people hide behind “it happens to me” instead of taking control of their own life. And that brings me to the answer on your next question.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

It gives motivation to step up.
We need to raise each other up.
We need to be reminded we can be bosses too. That way we all can be heard.
