HOW DID YOU IDENTIFY YOUR PASSION AND THE WORK THAT SATISFIED YOU VERSUS WORK THAT JUST PAID THE BILLS?

Honestly, this is not easy to answer as the work that completely fulfills me does not pay the bills, but it makes me happy and allows me to raise my kids, which is more important. After having a doula in my first birth, I kept saying I could never be a doula, and well, here I am. Never say never. Life threw it at me. Kept putting people in my path for me to help and to guide and finally, to accompany during their birth processes. The satisfaction is definitely more rewarding than a weekly paycheck.

WHO WILL ETERNALLY BE A WOMAN YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT, AND WHY?

No one in particular, no one famous, each woman I meet who I know has stood up against the system, against injustice, against society to fight for what she believes in will forever have my deepest respect. This could be anyone you cross paths with. From your friend’s grandmother to a little girl defending her rights to be heard and validated.

IN LIGHT OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR HASHTAG #WHYITRIBE, WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO WE ALREADY ARE TODAY?

My tribe is my rock when I feel like I’m falling down. To me, motherhood gave me this tribe, it’s different from any other circle of friends I might have had or that I currently have. They know the importance of a true tribe when it comes to raising a human being, to being born as a mother. To needing a positive vibe when you’re feeling stuck around negative thoughts/feelings.

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF/HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but praising oneself is always deemed as being proud and that has always been something “bad”, but is it? I am VERY proud of myself and my work. I felt liberated saying it without the usual accompanying shame.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

II think we’re taught from early on to be humble and not proud, but we don’t get taught on how to be both. I think people feel ashamed of saying they’re proud of themselves. Let’s praise ourselves some more. Break the stigma.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

Still working on this, trying to be more open [to receive] and just accept and embrace those compliments. Instead of hurrying to dismiss them.

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA THAT WE, AS WOMEN, ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

I’m constantly feeling stuck in this battle, often whatever I say or do gets dismissed, devaluated, questioned, ridiculed, etc. We must know within ourselves that we DO have the power to not feel this way, WE ARE ENOUGH, WE ARE DESERVING. Let’s change our mindsets, I know this is easier said than done, but we can actively work towards this collective goal.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

We need each other more than ever. We need our tribe. Let’s all tribe (pun intended).
