HOW DID YOU IDENTIFY YOUR PASSION AND THE WORK THAT SATISFIED YOU VERSUS WORK THAT JUST PAID THE BILLS?

For me, it was actually the other way around! When I first started out as an entrepreneur, I was managing a business that I disliked and left me miserable with my life and past unsatisfied. It was when I started dabbling into digital design and marketing that I found my true passion. Also, from the beginning it was my love for designing and developing that paid the bills. My initial business wasn’t making much money and NOYADESIGNS was paying the bills for both businesses.

WHO WILL ETERNALLY BE A WOMAN YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT, AND WHY?

This is a really hard question for me. If you had asked me this question 5 years ago, I would have said my mother. When I was younger, I wanted to be just like her: polished, artistic and the true definition of a lady. However, as life would have it, we’ve since grown apart. This has left me really seeking out a woman who can fill this place in my life.

IN LIGHT OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR HASHTAG #WHYITRIBE, WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO WE ALREADY ARE TODAY?

At times, we can lose track of just how far we’ve come. As we are not currently at the place called “there” yet, we feel like the journey is simply one of striving and steps that we need to take to reach that destination. It is important for us to celebrate – alone and together – that we have come this far and it is an achievement to be standing where we are standing. We are worth the time, the effort and the joy that comes from recognizing our achievements as women.

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF/HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

“You look good” I tried on a different outfit, something totally  different than what I would typically wear, just yesterday and it made me fear powerful and confident. It totally changed my outlook on the day.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

In the words of Aunty Chimamanda, “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you would threaten the man.” I think this mindset has been ingrained to us for so long, that we look at praising ourselves as us being prideful, and as such, we shy away from it and keep ourselves small.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

For myself, I try to rationalize the compliment. This may not be the right way to do it, but this is how I accept when people compliment me. After some time of pondering, it then comes to me that the compliment is warranted, is true and I then accept it.

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA THAT WE, AS WOMEN, ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

Society consistently shows us that woman is less than when they don’t listen, woman is inferior when they silence our voices, our pleas and our cries. The silencing of woman that is so prevalent in every area of life. It is a part of society as we know it. We can take this power back by speaking up and by acting out of the mold that society has placed on us.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

THE TRIBE Movement is important because the more women can see that it is possible to be happy and proud of who we are, at the stage where we are at right now. This will help us to be able to find our confidence and be able to make changes not only to ourselves, but the world at large.
