WHYITRIBE (THE REASON YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO YOU ALREADY ARE):

We live in interesting times. Although representatives of who we are is very well rounded, we are also isolated. Everyone stands for something and voices are original, and we are taking sides and committing to movements.

At least 3 years ago, I was wondering if this era would really create any history of revolution. Now I see that the revolution is in our voices and our bodies. The juxtaposition of what is considered beautiful is so different to the confidence the roles models I look up to possess.

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF / HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

I am super critical of myself. I’m trying to change that attitude and take good care of myself, and think about how I affect people around me. I was in denial that I was making an impact at all, but because of social media accessibility girls reach out to me everyday asking me ‘how do I do it’ or that it ‘inspires’ them to see me. I have severe anxiety about being called ‘beautiful ‘ for example, because I am fearful of not being talented or be a good person. But when I say thank you, to that compliment, it releases me of that anxiety and humbles me. So, I’m learning to accept love and the ‘good’ things about myself. Because apparently, I am making an impact . That motivates me.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

I can only say for myself…being hard on oneself keeps us away from celebrating a moment of exchange and goodness. Being true. We are always defending ourselves or have an armour of protection to prevent us from making wrong choices. Also, the media painting unrealistic beauty standards doesn’t allow young girls to celebrate being in their bodies.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

Like I said, I’m learning to be grateful and say thank you with grace. Sometimes the simplest things take the longest. I got bitter about some people rejecting who I am and even though the survivor in me took it in stride, I carried that in my heart. As I lead with my head, things are getting back to simple things like cherishing loving admiration.

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA WE ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

Just block everything including people who do not understand or respect you. Time is short and we are here to learn with open minds and self respect. Do anything without regret, and be hopeful beyond boundaries of your own fear of rejection and acceptance. At the end of the day, no matter who’s around you, we come in to this world to be our own voices, and learning to live gently is optimum goal. We should be lucky if we get to leave an impact at all. So yeah time is short, society naysayers are not coming in between me and my dreams, and definitely not in my grave.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

It’s important to stand for something and be of use. We need people to make something positive, co-created together.
