WHYITRIBE (THE REASON YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO YOU ALREADY ARE):

I think we probably spend too much time apologising for who we are and I feel the time has now come to flip that on its head. We should feel proud of the women we’ve become and we should celebrate that. It’s been an immense hustle to get here so why not enjoy the fruits of our hard labour.

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF / HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

I recently penned a letter to myself as a 16-year-old – it was for an article I was writing for The Big Issue magazine. I catalogued the code of ethics I’d lived my life by over the past 16 years and in the process I realised that I hadn’t turned out too badly! I gave myself a big pat on the back for having the perception back then to know what kind of life I wanted to live and the type of person I wanted to become. I felt quite elevated after the experience.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

I think humility is just part of our DNA. Most of us are happy to put the head down, dig our heels and get the job done. In my opinion, it’s what makes women so awesome – this coupled with humanity. I think we should, however, employ more skills to promote ourselves in a way that still displays our wonderful and disarming manner.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

I’m still working on that!

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA WE ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

I feel that because we’re not afraid to show emotion and use our EQ in everything we do – this can sometimes be mis-interpreted as weakness. I think we should use our EQ as an apparatus to create change and build a level playing field where both men and women can work as equals and EQ and IQ are also deemed equal.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

I’ve always believed it was important to surround myself with powerful women and I’ve actively done that over the past ten years. I believe we should support each other and empower each other. We should celebrate each other’s success as that glass ceiling is not going to be broken by one or two females, it’s going to be smashed by a coalition of great female minds and spirits. And that’s exactly what THE TRIBE movement aspires to do!
