WHYITRIBE (THE REASON YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO YOU ALREADY ARE):

We live in a society where assembling together to celebrate and encourage other women can be scarce. I think it’s important to do this as we contribute so much to society on a daily basis and many of these contributions can go unnoticed.

We juggle so many things as women and we sometimes need to be reminded that we are good at what we do! It’s also nice to celebrate the accomplishments of other women, as it inspires me to move forward with my goals in life.

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF / HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

It’s been a bad habit of mine in the past not to compliment myself, but I have realised I need to do this more often, and have been doing so recently. It makes me feel more confident in the abilities that have been given to me.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

I think society has a way of making us feel incomplete and we sometimes believe we’re not the full package. I call it Proverbs 31 syndrome whereby we look at what’s considered the ‘ideal woman’, look at ourselves and concede we are not good enough.

If on the other hand we DO celebrate ourselves we can be labelled as conceited, a ‘Diva’, a ‘burn your bra’ feminist or someone with attitude so we play it down.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

I believe that there is power in the tongue and your words can steer you to success or failure. I tend not to say negative things about myself or discredit nice things that are said because once you start to believe them; they can slowly have a negative impact on your life.

That being said, I also believe the same is also true for positive affirmations – believing in these can have such a positive effect, so it’s worth agreeing with those statements and embracing them.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

We need an environment where we as women can be celebrated and feel what we have achieved and who we are is good enough. We can constantly be stripped of our confidence in our abilities and our outward appearance and we need to remind each other we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and we have the ability to accomplish anything we put our mind too.
