HOW DID YOU IDENTIFY YOUR PASSION AND THE WORK THAT SATISFIED YOU VERSUS WORK THAT JUST PAID THE BILLS?

Creativity has always been my passion from my childhood. It’s always been where I feel most centered and alive. My career in travel and tourism was an amazing and lovely journey, that did pay the bills and more. However there was a void like a part of myself was missing. When our son was a child, I prayed for direction for a home based business that would afford me the freedom to be a hands on Mom that was completely involved in his education process and daily activities. Then DCD The Crown Jewels was born with my first sales of handcrafted jewelry. I never looked back!

WHO WILL ETERNALLY BE A WOMAN YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT, AND WHY?

That would have to be Katherine Johnson from the NASA space program! When I saw the movie Hidden Figures I was completely enthralled by the brilliance that all three women portrayed. But Miss Katherine Johnson reminds me of my late Mother. Both were mathematical geniuses whose work ethics were unparalleled in their government careers. They were also both “hidden”. At a time when women of color and women in general were not valued for their intellect, Miss Johnson was a trailblazer for many generations to come. Empowering that nothing is impossible when you use your gifts to achieve! I’m eternally grateful for Miss Katherine Johnson and thrilled that her story came to light for all.

IN LIGHT OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR HASHTAG #WHYITRIBE, WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WHO WE ALREADY ARE TODAY?

Oh my goodness! There is such an energy in the air of sisterhood and empowerment for US! There’s always been this thing about hate, and competition, and envy always associated with the females. Now there are so many outlets that celebrate us! When I came across The Tribe on Instagram it was just different. Full of beautiful ethnically diverse women feeling themselves! In these most challenging of times, we need to support each other daily and just how much we give to this world and what we have to offer uniquely, and daily in every avenue of life! #smallstraws

NAME A TIME RECENTLY WHEN YOU SAID SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF/HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

That would just the other day when I said “I’m working on me”. I shared how empowered I feel to have started a 30 bootcamp last month and of that 30 days I worked out 18 days!! Something great for me every week in June! And I’m still committed to working out weekly and feeling super about it.

WHY DO YOU THINK WOMEN SHY AWAY FROM CELEBRATING OR PRAISING THEMSELVES SO MUCH?

I think that sometimes we are our own worst critics. We’re just to hard on ourselves and sometimes each other. Some care too much about what other women think about them and are shy or fearful to share. Social media can make it challenging because it moves so quickly and is visually empowering for many but some women down themselves by comparing instead of celebrating their own special uniqueness.

HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE TENDENCY TO DISCREDIT COMPLIMENTS YOU ARE GIVEN?

In a word… Energy and Gratitude! I feel like there are so many beautiful simple joys in art, nature, babies, and creativity! So I give compliments all the time! When I see someone that that’s just rocking their life and look I tell them! LOL like “Oh I love your shoe’s” or “those glasses” or “your hair looks amazing”. I believe that positive energy sent out comes back like a boomerang. And usually when you need it the most.

HOW DOES SOCIETY REINFORCE THE IDEA WE ARE NOT ENOUGH AND HOW CAN WE TAKE THAT POWER BACK?

Number one, HOW MUCH WE ARE PAID to do the same jobs in the corporate world as our male counterparts and not be compensated in the same dollars and cents, bonuses and packages as men period. We take our power back by starting our own. By helping each other to believe and achieve financial empowerment and freedom individually and collectively. Not everyone knows exactly where to start. By helping women to manifest their dreams and talents collectively is key.

WHY IS THE TRIBE MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?

THE TRIBE is a Fresh, Fun and a SUPER empowering movement! It transcends boundaries and stigmas! It’s a thought provoking daily reminder that we can change the way we look at life, ourselves and our challenges, and do something amazing for this world. AND look fabulous while doing all that and more! #WhyITribe
